Player advice

Postby Dragoncowboy » Thu Jun 14, 2012 10:06 am

Alright.... I don't really understand what's going on so I need some advice...

I really thought this guy was going to be a stud when I scouted him and his first three season he progressed as expected. Well last season stunk and if last night is any indication of what this season holds then it's not looking much better. I just don't understand... I maxed him last season and his effective skill rating appears to be above average in every category. I'm thinking about changing his focus to see if that helps.... any suggestions on how to better bring this guy along. It's really frustrating to train everyday and not see the desired results!

Well first thing. Looks like hes being used on the bench. I would check the teams lineup to make sure that he is not being used against a weak opponet. Like if you set to be strong againt a movement pitcher and you playing againt a control picther that you could be weak againt.

Your skills all look good, but also you are a low level B league player at level 21, you possible are playing againt players that are level 30, which are 9 levels higher. So you do have to take the level into effect and being on the bench doesnt help. Looks like you are set to play againt movement pitchers and your vision skills show that you are strong againt movement. may want to add a game changer, if you have some to your player which could help him out as well.

I think his build looks good. My advice would be to get a Gamechanger to give him a little extra edge, Also try to "smooth" out his skills a little bit, they are a little to jagged for my tastes. He's a SS the size of Starlin Castro, I would try and mold this guy into a high average speed guy instead of power. Focus more on Vision and Accuracy, rather than power.

Microscopic sample size tbh. Last season he hit .296 cant call that "Stunk" and your player was probably out leveled last season, this season the guy has 8 AB's!!!!!!!!!! Chill wait for him to atleast get to 100 AB's before gathering any conclusions.

But if i were you i would focus on more at some skill and not that tasteless (no offense) i say tasteless because he is the same in preety much everything, to rounded of a build for my taste mind you, i would make a choice do i want him to be a Power guy/Hit for Average/splash hitter whith alot of speed... But that would be how i would aproach a build. Anyways is too early to take any conclusions, he might became the next Babe Ruth and i will still not build players like that.

Good luck.

If I may weigh in as the team owner for a second.

Lane Frost is not a bench player. He is in the starting line-up against most pitcher builds as his 17 PAs attest. It may look like he is as he only has 8 official ABs - the other 9 are a combination of walks (6), HBP (2), or Sacrifice Flies (1). he has a .588 OBP which is a managers dream come true... but as Canonico has indicated, it is a very small sample size as a starter this year, and last year he was a limited role player.

That said, his batting average and slugging may seem a little light. My suggestion is since his skills are above league average in all areas (almost to a balanced build type) that Lane focuses on building up his Vision skills like Line Drive and Bat Control. When those get higher (closer to 100% ESR) throw in a little Fly Ball for power, and Speed/Ground Ball for additional base hits.

Now... all THAT said... I believe that Lane Frost will have a monster season as he is a well built player. His somewhat even distribution was a strong selling point for me as a manager, and even though being level 20 helps, a strong reason why he is an everyday player. After a few series, my guess is that he will start to see his average and power rise, and his OBP regress a little more towards normal... and that's if he doesn't do a thing.

This is an excellent point. Asking for build advice is great, especially for those learning the game, but a manager might not want you to share your info with the competition. I think it would be best practice to ask your manager/coach 1st before asking the community. If you are on a CPU team that would be different of course. Maybe we should add a Build Advice forum topic? This could be similar to the "Rate my player" thread in a similar game. As long as we are not bashing or insulting a players build and providing encouraging advice, this could be a nice addition.

Thoughts?

I can't agree with this enough.

Matt Cain opened this season with a 6 inning outing allowing 5 earned runs against the D'backs. If only one opening series determined how good or bad a player would be, then he would have been in some serious trouble. However, he's thrown two complete game shutouts, including his perfect game last night.

The moral of this story is to relax and let the games play out. No need to hop in a lifeboat and bail out right after your ship left the dock.

Thanks all for the great advice. I will definitely stick closely to my team owners suggestions.

This is a great point. While I have been playing this game for a couple season, I still fill like a newbie as to the nuances of the games such as player builds, backgrounds, focus, etc... I did hesitate posting here looking for advice because of the same concerns that you voice above and wavered between asking in the team forum or in the public forum. I decided on this forum simply because of the bigger pool of knowledge but I may have erred in the department of discretion... It would be nice if there was a forum where these specific things could be discussed.

Some of the best teams my players have been on and even some of the best ones I've owned have encouraged players to ask within the team forum.

I'm familiar with djch's work on here as an owner and he fields great teams and has a great knowledge of the game. You could also just simply PM your team owner or one of the team's managerial staff (which can be found on the team's home page).

I can speak for my own teams that I encourage it whenever possible to ask me or the other scouts on the team.

However, it is possible that there are some "deadbeat owners" on here that might not be so helpful. In that case, a forum might be necessary. But I know djch is not one of those, as evidence by his participation here.

Just my $.02.
